The #1 cause of dissatisfaction and consumer complaints when dealing with a home improvement project is the lack of standardization and professionalism in the industry. —Stated by local Wisconsin homeowners
As the owner of this manual you will walk through an easy to use, step by step process by which you will be able to do the following: Interview prospective contractors, research a company’s background, know the right questions to ask and avoid negligence and fraud; request and verify referrals; request and know the insurance requirements your contractor needs to have; detail material and product specifications; monitor the performance of your project; understand lien rights and waivers for all parties on your job; know your rights as well as the contractors rights to payments and distributions; understand deposit requirements, time scheduling and much more.
With Americans spending billions of dollars per year on home improvements, it has become apparent there is a need to regulate and standardize this industry. For Wisconsin, this is a start.
This book is a blueprint that incorporates standardization with regulation to help make every endeavor for home improvement successful. You are now equipped with an A-to-Z guide of how you can conduct a successful home improvement project. From the initial meetings with contractors to the performance of a project for which you have a signed contract, the standard set here will give you peace of mind and a legitimate process by which you may redeem yourself should you not get what you have paid for.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I began in the home improvement industry as an inside sales person for a local Milwaukee, Wisconsin building product sales company. It was there that I began to believe there was a definite need for an A-to-Z guide for a homeowner to follow, eliminating the gray areas of who to hire, how to get what you have paid for, and know your rights to have a great home improvement project done.
Prior to the publication of this manual, and still today, I own and operate a construction company with my husband in Wisconsin. We not only felt the desire to help a homeowner find comfort in hiring and having a home improvement completed working with a contractor, but also decided there was also the availability for our family, having the knowledge we have to own a company of our own. One that would focus on the customer, bringing honestly and experienced workmanship to every job. I am proud to say that coming upon our fourth year in business, we have done just that.
We have found this to be true of our customers and most everyone we have met. People have a single desire when it comes to this industry, that is to get what is promised to them by most, to have an honest job done for honest pay. I hope this book will help each person who uses it get just that.
It is my goal to help each person achieve an excellent outcome in every project they may embark on. I will continue to strive for systemization and duplication in the Wisconsin Home Improvement Industry, reaching for high standards and heightened awareness. A dream is simply a dream without a goal behind it. The goal here is simple: to simplify this industry. Together, we can make it work for everyone. Best of luck. ~ T.C. Tilson & Family.
