This story is basically a work of fiction. Some characters named are those of true history, and there are happenings that took place during the time in which it was written, but it is not my intention that readers believe all of these happenings occurred as implied.

I have nearly eliminated the brogue of the colonists. They hailed from various parts of the mother country, and I know the difficulty of reading books that are filled with wording typical of them.

The story centers on a small group of pioneers who attempted to remove themselves from Boston to the Connecticut Valley before authority was granted for such movements.

Research was necessary, but I have taken no copy from the books I have read other than a passage from the Holy Bible.

Nature was closely knit in the lives of the settlers. This lends elementary effect to some parts of the novel. Also, I do not avoid that heartache and sorrow were commonplace in those days. I warn for preparation to hear of it. Insight can be gained on conditions that existed during those early years, but my effort has been to supply adventure not comparable to that of modern living adventure, which time has set apart.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

This pioneer story contains nothing discriminatory to protective reading for children or adults. It lends insight to life among Native Americans as well as the first settlers of Europeans. In no other source is the love of neighbors and friends more empathized than in this book — a way of living that leaves us to wonder how much appreciation we have lost for those of our own association.

History of those years is covered in a way readers will learn much of what took place. The involvements bring it to light in a way more interesting than books of classroom descriptions.
