We live in an era of obscenely expensive political campaigns, perceived and real political corruption, corporate greed, fraudulent investment and banking schemes, and biased if not deliberately distorted reporting of information by the media. There is only one effective path left to individuals that may guarantee the protection of their civil liberties and financial well-being: total reliance on reason and objective judgment, rather than blind acceptance of claims based on ideology or leap of faith. Whereas leap of faith may be warranted in very special occasions, it seldom provides solid ground for protection. Such reliance on reason and its lack thereof is applicable to all walks of life in our society, whether political, financial, or social, leading to either beneficial or harmful results. The history of our nation consists of enlightenment periods during which reason prevailed, as well as of dark periods during which both reason and objective judgment were totally ignored.
