by James Bullock

This is a story about freedom. It is a story of European colonies in a desperate struggle for survival. England’s power and economic strength are on the rise while Spain’s are in decline. Both will ultimately lose control of their interests in the New World and will experience failure, loss, and grief. Both colonies are isolated and vulnerable. Their citizens live in fear. Both sides feel morally right. Each had their own system of slave labor. Spanish slavery allowed for legal rights for slaves in court, allowed working to purchase freedom, and forbade the breaking up of families in slave states. English slavery allowed for harsh treatment of African slaves with no rights or hope of emancipation and included indentured servitude with Europeans, serving a seven-year contract. Both sides experienced painful results in their dealings with Native Americans, indentured servants, people of mixed blood, pirates, and runaways.

Ask yourself who the winners and losers of this war are. In the end, both England and Spain fail, ending a page in a bloody chapter of history. All of the issues left unresolved here led to the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Trail of Tears, the Seminole Wars, and the Civil War. This story should inspire. Take a walk in the footsteps of your ancestors. Perhaps you’ll choose sides.
