The Ethics of William James

by Bernard P. Brennan
This book is a synthesis of the religious, epistemological, and metaphysical thought of William James, organized on the premise that his philosophy was developed to provide a rational defense of morality.
The polemical and the popularized stains in James’s thought are subordinated to the constructive and highly professional search for an answer to life’s most baffling and profound questions. His search is shown to have been answered in his penetrating philosophical synthesis. Out of the countless concrete data of psychological, religious, and philosophical experiences, James created an orderly, dynamic, pluralistic worldview that stands as a monumental achievement of philosophical genius.
In The Ethics of William James, Dr. Bernard P. Brennan brings together the scattered thoughts of James that lend themselves to organization into a synoptic structure. He shows that elements of thought, apparently haphazard and fragmentary, are parts of a magnificent synthesis culminating in man’s relations with the supernatural. This synthesis is a philosophy that is penetrated throughout by James’s ethical interests and oriented primarily toward ethical goals.
