A Dog's Life

A Dog’s Life is about a toy poodle named Mickey. Although Mickey lacked the ability to speak words, the author soon found out that animals are capable of communicating with numerous subtle and not-so-subtle expressions, sounds, and behaviors. As Mickey and Ms. Johnstone’s lives progressed, they began to understand each other very well. Ms. Johnstone accepted the premise that dogs find it necessary to learn at least parts of their owners spoken language. She also worked at understanding Mickey’s.

“Mickey was very bright, curious, and above all, exceptionally brave. He faced the world and his personal obstacles with outstanding courage, humor, and intelligence. Mickey never let me down. He became my best friend and companion. If Mickey could have spoken or tapped out sentences on a keyboard, I am confident this is what he would have said.”

While Ms. Johnstone attempted to train Mickey about life, she confesses that the dog also trained and taught her about who he was and what he needed and wanted. Ms. Johnstone allowed her dog to lead the way, however, Mickey was an alpha male and Ms. Johnstone laughingly admits that she is an alpha female so there was a lot of give and take during their time together.

Ms. Johnstone has been a practicing fine artist for over thirty years. She also holds a masters degree in education with a variant in art therapy. She currently maintains a private practice in Northville, Michigan. In many ways much of her therapy applications are linked with helping others work through a variety of grief and loss issues. Ms. Johnstone believes a positive attitude is the first and most important criteria for healing and that all healing begins within.
