by Dr. Paul W. Dale

The people of Palau have lived on their collection of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean for hundreds of years, having arrived there from some unknown source. The natives have developed their own unique culture, language, body of knowledge, oral history, and myths devoid of any input from outside cultures. But, the August 1783 wreck of the English merchant ship Antelope on an outlying reef changed all that.

The Discovery of the Palau Islands is the account of the men of the Antelope, what they saw, heard, and experienced while shipwrecked on the island. Theirs is the first and only description of this isolated culture before the discovery made them known to the European world.
