by Peter J. Baker

Words of colour link us to all manners of things, all manners of endeavors and to our distant and near past. They are, however, afflicted with the “Humpty Dumpty” effect. “When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, “it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.” * This book is an exploration of the logical and illogical, the known and the unknown, the serious and the not so serious words that colour our language and our world. It is an endeavor to provide a semblance of order in this fascinating realm and, perhaps, gently encourage us toward agreement on what words mean.

Reader Review
This is one of the most comprehensive dictionaries of “colours & pigments” that I have yet to come across. Baker, a “country GP” in Australia, applies his scientifically informed background to the extensively rich world of words pertaining to the world of color. Although the book contains far more information than any artist might actually need, it is nevertheless a handy guide to have around one’s studio.
