DAX by George B. Saxton

DAX is an account of two brothers who survive the clutches of a dictatorial father. Their story is told through a series of dramatic narratives and letters.
In his early years, Dax Bennett fears his father while Zane, his younger brother, is often openly rebellious. Consequently, the relationship between the boys and their father is frequently strained. Their loving mother suffers a chronic illness that renders her helpless as the family begins to disintegrate. Dax eludes his father by entering the army during World War II, where he is befriended by maverick Sergeant Jim Curry. They are involved in military episodes. Dax encounters lovely Michelle Adaire and a serious romance develops. When the war ends, Dax and Jim choose to remain in Belgium and establish a successful business. Back in the States, Zane also escapes his father's control and achieves distinction as a jazz trumpeter in New York. Contrasting reactions develop when Dax and Zane, thousands of miles apart, learn of their father's impending death.
